Diabetes...

It's confirmed. I am the newest name to the long list of people with Type II Diabetes. It's not really news to me. I knew this day would inevitably come.

While I was pregnant with Keegan, I had a multitude of "issues." Luckily, it was only me that was screwed up, Keegan came out just perfect. One of my issues was gestational diabetes. They discovered it at week 28 when I had to take that glucose test. Well, I failed the 1 hour, 3 hour, and 5 hour test. If I failed the 1 and 3, did they really think I had a chance of passing the 5 hour test? Come on. Anyways, I failed them all with flying colors. My sugars were up in the 3 and 4 hundreds! I was immediately sent to a specialist where I saw a video from 1980 about diabetes. Then they told me what my diet should be...and it was pretty tasteless. After 1 week of being on this bland diet, they told me that my sugars were too high and I needed to inject insulin. Injections aren't a big deal to me anymore. After I donated eggs a few years ago and had to shoot hormones in me daily, this was a breeze. So I was pregnant, on bed rest, and shooting up everyday.

After Keegan was born, they checked me almost immediately and I was fine. Go figure.

Since then, I have been checking my sugars on my own sporadically and lets just say they haven't been the best numbers. So I decided to have it professionally checked and it has been confirmed. Right now, I have a device implanted (yes, I said implanted) in me and it checks my sugars every 5 minutes for 4 days. This will determine whether I need oral medication or insulin injections. So we shall see. I actually want medication. I don't believe in diets and I refuse to follow a specific diet. (For the record, I did follow a diet while pregnant because that wasn't just about me...it was about Keegan). I eat fairly healthy. I have switched to whole wheat pastas and I am working on switching to better bread (I grew up eating white bread, I'm accustomed to it). My plate is usually very colorful with fruits and veggies of all sorts. And I occasionally drink beer (oh the carbs). Occasionally is a lot better than what I used to drink, trust me. BUT, I am a self-proclaimed chocoholic and I refuse to give chocolate up. I have cut back though. I have also begun working out regularly.

I knew this day would come and it was not shocking. I am prepared and ready to deal with it. It's a lifestyle change, but one for the better and I'm ready to tackle it head on.

So there you have it, confirmed and in the record books.

Hi my name is Bethany and I'm a diabetic.

  1. Good for you. Being aware & informed is good. I am sure if you are exercising, eating well & taking care of yourself.. that having a beer & some chocolate from time to time is fine. I am still finding things that I have to work on.. I am just borderline though.
There is a lot of classes to take & groups to join to inform you. I know it sounds silly.. but sometimes though things help :-)
