It was almost pouring the other day when I was on my way to the dentist. As I was driving, I passed an abortion clinic with a group of older men and women lining the front sidewalk facing the clinic with their rainjackets on and umbrellas open. They were praying. They are there every day out front praying. It made me think of just how lucky I am to be alive.
Being adopted has given me a different outlook on life. Some people view adoption as a mother giving up a child she didn't want. Yes, I'm sure that is true in some cases, but I believe that mothers who give their child up want the child be raised in the best possible environment, and they know they can't provide that. It's the most selfless act a woman could do. To carry a child for 9 months, nurturing it while in the womb, and bonding with the fetus, all knowing that this child will be raised by someone else is the most unselfish act.
When people find out that I'm adopted, they always ask me if I've ever met my birthmother. I haven't. Would I like to? Yes. But only out of curiosity. I would never want this woman to play a role in my life. I already have a mother, and she's the best damn mother out there. A friend of mine once met her birthmother and her birthmother had always struggled with second thoughts and wondering if she made the right decision by giving her up. My friend told her she made the right decision. It'd be nice to tell my birthmother that she made the right decision too. I couldn't ask for a better set of parents. They've always provided for me and drowned me in love, even when I resisted.
I have 4 parents out there that love me, 2 that made me and 2 that raised me. I have double the love. And I'm thankful for that.
